An assessment of bone strength and falls risk, with treatment and practical changes that help you stay on your feet.
This may be appropriate if
- You are 70 or older
- You are over 50 and have broken a bone after a minor fall
- You have gone through menopause early, take long-term steroid medicines, or have a parent who had a hip fracture
Not sure? Book a standard appointment and your GP will advise.
With your GP
Your history, medicines, diet, activity and a simple balance and strength check.
Bone density scan
A referral for a DEXA scan if one is due. It takes a few minutes and you stay fully clothed.
Treatment
Where clinically appropriate, treatment may include an injection every six months. Your doctor gives the first dose and our nurses the doses after that.
Staying steady
Advice on exercise, footwear, vision and the home, with referral to a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist where it would help.
Your questions answered
A few of the things people often wonder about before booking. If there's something else on your mind, just ask, we're always happy to talk it through.
Is a bone density scan covered by Medicare?
Medicare covers scans for people aged 70 and over and for some younger people with specific risk factors. Your GP will tell you if you qualify.
Do I bring the injection with me?
Yes. Your GP gives you a script, you fill it at a pharmacy, keep it in the fridge and bring it to your appointment.
I feel fine. Why check?
Thinning bones cause no symptoms until one breaks. Finding it early is the whole point.
