When it's relevant

Passing urine more often, especially at night, a weaker stream, difficulty starting, or a family history of prostate cancer.

Why it's worth a visit

Urinary changes are common with age and usually have a harmless cause, but they can be treated, and occasionally point to something that needs attention.

How your GP can help

Your GP asks about your symptoms, examines you if appropriate and explains what a PSA blood test can and cannot tell you, so the decision to test is an informed one.

Your questions answered

A few of the things people often wonder about before booking. If there's something else on your mind, just ask, we're always happy to talk it through.

Should every man have a PSA test?

It is a personal decision. The test can find cancer early but can also lead to treatment that was never needed. Your GP will help you weigh it up.

At what age should I start the conversation?

Usually from 50, or from 40 to 45 if you have a strong family history.

Is an examination always needed?

Not always. Your GP will explain if it would help.
