When it's relevant

Periods becoming irregular or heavier, hot flushes or night sweats, poor sleep, low or anxious mood, or trouble concentrating, often from your early to mid forties.

Why it's worth a visit

These changes are common and often dismissed, sometimes for years. Other conditions can cause similar symptoms, so it is worth checking.

How your GP can help

Your GP listens to what has changed, rules out other causes where needed and talks through the options, from practical measures to prescribed treatment where appropriate.

Who can help

All of our GPs can help with this.

Your questions answered

A few of the things people often wonder about before booking. If there's something else on your mind, just ask, we're always happy to talk it through.

Is there a test for perimenopause?

Usually not. In most people over 45 it is recognised from symptoms, because hormone levels vary too much from day to day to be reliable.

I still have regular periods. Could it still be this?

Yes. Symptoms can begin while periods are still regular.

Do I still need contraception?

Yes, until your GP advises otherwise. Pregnancy is still possible in perimenopause.
