When it's relevant

You are 70 or older, have broken a bone after a minor fall, went through menopause early, or have taken steroid medicines for a long time.

Why it's worth a visit

Thinning bones cause no symptoms until one breaks, and a fracture later in life can mean a real loss of independence.

How your GP can help

Your GP assesses your risk, arranges a bone density scan when one is due, and discusses treatment and practical steps to stay steady on your feet.

Your questions answered

A few of the things people often wonder about before booking. If there's something else on your mind, just ask, we're always happy to talk it through.

Is a bone density scan covered by Medicare?

For people aged 70 and over, and for some younger people with specific risk factors.

How is treatment given?

It depends on what is appropriate for you. Some treatments are given as an injection every six months.

What can I do myself?

Weight-bearing exercise, enough calcium and vitamin D, and reducing the risk of falls at home all help.

Ready when you are.
